SRW drum compaction unit

The unit is intended for reducing the amount of SRW in the process of filling 100-l drums with radioactive waste for the rational formation of SRW packages to be compacted at the Supercompactor facility and for the SRW compaction directly in 100-l drums to be further placed and conditioned in casks.

 COMPOSITION OF COMPACTED SRW:

- items of glass, ceramic, polymers and rubber;
- laboratory equipment;
- metallic waste;
- soil, building debris;
- heat-insulating materials.
The thickness of metallic items in SRW is not more than 3 mm. The content of rubber items in an SRW package is not more than 7 % wt. The content of moisture in an SRW package is not more than 1 % wt. The weight of an SRW-filled 100-l drum is 100 to 200 kg.

PERFORMANCE

- maximum compaction force - 20/200 t/kN;
- volume reduction factor - up to 6;
- compaction cycle time - 2 min;
- maximum working pressure in the hydraulic system -16.5 MPa;
- compaction chamber dimensions (inner) - 1580x920x1150 mm;
- motor power - 7,5 kW;
- unit dimensions - 1700x1550x2500 mm;
- total weight - 750 kg;
- noise level - < 65 dB (A);

Specific activity of SRW to be processed:
- for α - active waste - 2.2Е+5 Bq/kg;
- for β - active waste - 3.7Е+6 Bq/kg.

LEVEL OF DEVELOPMENT

The unit for the SRW compaction in 100-l drums has been in operation at RADON since 2008. The technology of compaction and precompaction in 100-l drums has been tried out and successfully introduced, and meets the requirements of regulations in the field of radioactive waste handling. A compact, easy-to-operate and reliable unit for reducing the SRW amount by compaction method can be used at sites with radioactive waste processing and storage operations.
RADON has an extensive experience, employs qualified personnel and possesses the required capability for development of technologies and design of radioactive waste processing compactors.
