Storage

Storage STRUCTURE 103

Function

Long-term radwaste isolation supposes its storage for a period of 50 years. Design provides for a possibility of subsequent transformation of structure into final disposal facility for radwaste.

Type

Surface, made of cast-in-situ reinforced concrete, sizes 170x190x6 m (LBH), consists of 20 standard self-contained modules, each of them includes 6 sections. RW load is fulfilled through the module side openings.

Drainage system

There are 3 systems designed:

- storm water drain;

- wall boundary embedded drainage;

- filtrate removal.

Waste form

Radioactive wastes are disposed in conditioned form being extractable and transportable; wastes are packed in certified reinforced concrete and metal containers. Engineering barriers Matrix materials, long-lasting containers, cast-in-situ reinforced concrete constructions.

Preservation

In a case of transformation of construction into RW final disposal facility there will be buffer aggregate introduced and complex covering with biological barrier and impervious screen constructed.

STRUCTURE 69

RW isolation efficiency (proportional to “protection costs” factor) should be commensurate to danger level. Special landfills for very low-level waste generated in the result of remediation and decommissioning works are put into operation in the USA, France and other countries. Thus simplified system of engineering barriers is applied, and owing to this fact burial disposal costs are decreased in hundreds of times.

While in Russia a tendency of quick change from “simple” solutions (like bulk disposal) to systems with multibarrier RW isolation is observed. The following scheme is considered as the working variant of low- and intermediate-level waste isolation. At first primary waste packages are prepared using drums or metal containers, then they are put into reinforced concrete containers, which in turn are placed in surface storage. Cost of reinforced concrete containers is comparable to cost of this structure – the bunker of cast-in-situ reinforced concrete with drainage systems, engineering communications, etc.

FORMATION OF PRESERVATION COATINGS ON RADWASTE STORAGE SURFACES AT FSUE RADON

Preservation technology makes it possible to improve ecological safety of long-term RW isolation in near-surface storages.

Workup level:

There has been carried out re-concreting of RW mass on 10 storages of solid radioactive waste at FSUE Radon. The whole complex of formation of multifunctional preservation coating is carried out on 3 RW storages.
