Transportation

Radwaste transportation safety system created at the “Radon” organization practically excludes radionuclides emission into environment while transporting.

To transport RW to the Science and Production Complex “Radon” for the treatment and long-term storage special trucks are used. The Radon specialists have been dealing with their elaboration since the enterprise foundation.

Special trucks protect the personnel and environment from RW ill-effects during their transportation. Trucks for transportation of solid RW and ionizing radiation sources have strong closed steel tipping body that decreases the gamma-radiation power. Radiation sources before loading into the trucks are put into special transport containers, this ensures radiation safety as well as RW protection from mechanical effect.

Liquid RW are transported in double-wall tanks (there is a composition between the walls able to cover a leakage place if the inner shell tightness is spoiled).

The driver’s personal safety is ensured by a special lead panel between a radioactive load and a cabin.

Special trucks have modern communication facilities connected with the satellite tracking loops. On-line system “Poisk-2” for the control of the object condition operates in the “Radon” transport department. It allows to control the vehicles’ movement as well as load condition and driver’s health, and, if necessary, – to correct the route promptly.

RW are strictly controlled on their way to the treatment site (or the disposal site). This control begins at the stage of RW preparation for sorting and loading. After the truck is loaded the specialists measure RW radiation power. There is a threshold dosimeter in a cabin of each truck that gives the sound and light signal if preset radiation level is exceeded. The load is controlled one more time before the truck unloading.

The ‘Radon’ truck convoy is escorted along their way by the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate groups. The routes are coordinated with the Traffic Safety Service, and if RW are taken out from the territories outside Moscow and Moscow region – with local authorities.
